Section#4: Survival and the “Amplification”, or “Suppression” of “Perceptions” - Likely the most famous of John Boyd’s “bits and pieces”, the “OODA Loop” (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) belongs to an overall framework to help organizations, as well as individuals, survive and prosper in a rapidly changing and hostile environment. The real-life clarity of Boyd’s iterative “OODA Loop” reflects Llinás’ Llinás’ description of the functional architecture of the brain. This combination of theoretical depth and survival adaptability makes the “OODA Loop” a “Process that Improves the Odds” instead of a “Checklist for Pattern-Matching”. Unexpectedly – from the perspective of rational decision-making - the effectiveness of the “OODA Loop” turns on the “Orient” step, thus the development of an authentic awareness of one’s “Amplification” or “Suppression” of “Perceptions”.
